Novo-Spassky monastery is one of the most ancient monasteries of Russia. Boyars Romanov chose it as a burial place for their family members. At the same place Sheremetiev's and Golitsyn's family members were buried. The grand duke Sergey Alexandrovitch was buried in the family burial vault of Romanov there. The cross, made in according to the sketch of Vasnetsov under the highest blessing of All-Russia Patriarch Alexiy II was transferred from the Kremlin territory to the territory of the monastery to the 2000 anniversary of Russia christening. At the time of total profanation of the Orthodoxy national sacred place, Romanovsky necropolis was profaned. Monastery temples were looted and partly destroyed. In 1991 cloister restoration began.

In spring of 2001 group of painter leaded by Vladimir Boytsov blessed by governor of Novo-Spassky monastery Bishop Orekhovo-Zuevsky proceeded to the painting of the monastery refectory. Restoration of refectory painting fragments dated the XIX century was done according to the sketches made by Vladimir Boytsov. Painting fragments of the end of XIX also needed partial restoration.

Glow and solemn tone were given to the restored painting by ornaments made by Vladimir Boytsov with tempera and acrylic gold. Refectory chandeliers made from polished brass needed restoration because of the influence of unfavorable climatic conditions and lighting by wax candles that blackened vaults and walls. They were cleaned, restored and serve as refectory decoration again now.

No more than within a month high-class specialists and professionals restored important elements of construction: steel tie and bolts in the refectory. Decoration of the refectory in following to the best traditions of Russian icon painting and academic school of painting included ornamental and thematic painting.

According to the sketches in tradition of painting of the XVI-XVII century were repainted excellent ornamental compositions that have something in common with fragments remained intact in corridors and cathedral. In the XVII century that painting was made by artel of icon painters leaded by Fedor Zubov.

Themes of wall paintings of the refectory are made with absolute knowledge of essential principles of icon painting and theology. Composition paintings: «Miraculous catch», «Increasing of bread», «Christ and Samaritan», «Walking on the water» are the return to ancient traditional painting.

Forms interpretation and color spectrum of that composition themes underlined richness of content and high spirituality of Christian dogma. Each painter inspired by the great idea of Orthodoxy, serving to God and people, expressed classic traditions. Combination of Old Russian icon painting and academic school traditions, conformity of each element of wall painting to the church canons are realized by painters Alexander Krestovsky, Dmitry Lisichenko-Lisitsa, Polina Lomakina, Andrew Rogov, Elena Terekhova and Elena Kostrova.
